Whalen appears on PBS' Design Squad
Submitted by Eric Kraushar on November 17, 2009 - 1:37pm.
The Connecticut Sun teamed up with Design Squad, the PBS Kids show, to film an episode in which two groups of aspiring engineers designed a T-shirt shooter for use at a game.
The episode is now available for viewing online at http://pbskids.org/designsquad/season3/index.html.
The challenge, posed to the two groups by former Sun player Tamika Raymond and Sun point guard Lindsay Whalen, was to design and build a way to safely distribute T-shirts to fans in the upper deck of Mohegan Sun Arena at a game.
Both groups presented their designs to Raymond, Whalen and show host Nate Ball prior to a Sun game against the Chicago Sky on Sunday, July 20, 2008. The winning team was revealed live during the game.
The episode is part of Season 3 of Design Squad, which is now available for viewing on public television stations across the country.
About Design Squad on PBS
Design Squad is a reality competition show aimed at kids and people of all ages who like reality or how-to television. Over the 10 half-hour episodes, including three two-parters, in the third season, six contestants tackle engineering challenges for real world clients-from creating remote-controlled aquatic pet rescue vehicles for the New Orleans Fire Department to building dry-land dog sleds for the Jamaica Dog Sled Team. All challenges cumulate in the finale, in which the captain of the winning team will take home a $10,000 college scholarship from the Intel Foundation. The Design Squad web site goes “behind the scenes” with cast interviews, photos, outtakes, and the inside scoop on each Design Squad challenge. Online, visitors may watch full-length streams of Design Squad episodes, share their thoughts, and learn more about the role of engineers in society, via www.pbs.org/designsquad.
